Why this product exists.
Backplain's founders spent years at Intuit leading engineering teams in regulated, high-stakes environments — Healthcare IT and Operations, enterprise Networking, and TurboTax. They left Intuit well before AI became the defining risk question for every enterprise.
What they carried with them was pattern recognition: what it looks like when powerful software outpaces the governance around it, and what it costs when regulated organizations get that wrong.
When the AI market emerged and began fracturing — dozens of models, inconsistent data policies, no audit trail, shadow usage spreading through legal, finance, and clinical teams — they recognized the gap immediately. Backplain exists to close it.

Backplain operates its production AI infrastructure on dedicated bare-metal servers housed in a SOC 2 Type II certified Tier 3 colocation data center in San Diego. We own the hardware — a single-tenant Lambda Scaler with 8 NVIDIA L40S GPUs and 1TB of RAM. The facility provides the physical security, power, cooling, and carrier-neutral connectivity. Our clients' data never touches shared infrastructure.
Thirty miles north, in Carlsbad, the Backplain AI Lab is a leased facility staffed by ML engineers, data scientists, DevOps engineers, and project managers. The Lab connects to the San Diego server over SD-WAN. Clients can lease a desk, a private room, or the entire facility — and work alongside our team, hand off work to us entirely, or anything in between. For clients requiring a fully air-gapped environment, the server can be relocated to the Carlsbad facility on request.
